Parrotlets

These birds are the smallest parrots kept as pets and they have about the same size personality as an Amazon. However, unlike Amazon, these birds are great for first-time owners. They are entertaining and playful, and they can even learn to talk and do tricks! Their tiny voices are such a joy and they will never cease to amaze you.

Sassy birds are fearless and just don’t realize how small they are. They may become aggressive to other birds (even much larger ones) and may become one-person birds if they are not socialized with multiple people on a regular basis. You should handle them every day or they may lose their tameness and become nippy. Just like having an Amazon, make sure you set clear boundaries early on with these little guys or they may not lose their childhood nippiness.

Enjoy human companionship, but they also don’t have a problem playing on their own. For this reason, most are not needy or demanding. The most commonly kept species is the Pacific Parrotlet. They are such a pleasure and if you would like a larger parrot but don’t have the room or the experience, then these birds might be a great choice for you.

Parakeets

Bird Care Guide: Parakeets (Budgies) Parakeets make very good pets as long as they have a lot of attention and love. …Parakeets come in over 100 color forms but primarily in green (typical in the wild), various shades of blue, white, gray, and yellow. Parakeets are 7″ to 9 3/8″ in length from bill to tail.

Parakeet Training

The small species are often seen as nippy birds and the large species can be sensitive biters. You definitely need to know how to train your ‘Keet if you want him to be hand tamed and enjoy spending time with you. However, if you don’t know how to train a ‘Keet, you may have difficulty even getting your bird out of his cage.

Lovebirds

A lovebird is the common name of Agapornis, a small genus of parrots. Eight species are native to the African continent, with the grey-headed lovebird being native to Madagascar

Those found in the wild are typically green with a variety of colors on their upper body, depending on the species. Some species, like the Black-masked, Fischer’s, Black-cheeked, and Yellow-collared lovebirds, have a white ring around the eye, although many color mutations have been developed in captivity.

As loving and affectionate as these birds tend to be with their chosen mate (whether it’s another bird or a human), as aggressive they can get with those they deem to be intruders or competitors for their mate’s affection. Their dominant and territorial nature can be a big issue with other pets

Diet / Feeding

Their natural diet includes various fruits, vegetables, plant material, grasses, and seeds. Black-winged Lovebirds (also known as Abyssinians) also feed on insects and figs.

Cockatiels

The cockatiel is also known as a miniature cockatoo or weero and also the quarrion is a bird that is a member of its own branch of the cockatoo family endemic to Australia. They are prized as household pets and companion parrots throughout the world and are relatively easy to breed.

Cockatiels are among the most popular pet birds. Small parrots with a variety of color patterns and a crest are attractive as well as friendly, and easy to tame. Due to their small size, cockatiel care and taming are easier than many other parrot species.

In the wild, cockatiels live for 10 to 14 years, but those in captivity can easily live for 20 years or longer. Guinness World Records lists Pretty Boy as the oldest confirmed cockatiel, who died in 2004 at the age of 29 years. With proper nutrition and exercise, your bird will be around for a long time.

What do cockatiels eat?
  • Seeds and pellets are the mainstays of your cockatiel’s diet.
  • Feed your bird dark, leafy greens every other day.
  • Offer your cockatiel fruit such as apple, banana, or melon once a week.
  • Offer your cockatiel a honey stick or millet spray once a month as a special treat.

Caiques

The caiques are species of parrots in the genus Pionites. They are relatively small and stocky, with a short, square tail and very bright colors. Their typical weight is 150–170 grams. They can live up to 40 years.

If the African grey parrot is the intellectual of the bird community, and the macaw is the show-off, then the caique is the clown.

Two species of caiques are commonly kept as pets: the black-headed caique (Pionites melanocephala) and the white-bellied caique (Pionites leucogaster). The yellow-thighed caique, a subspecies of the white-bellied, is also kept as a pet, though it is less common in the pet trade. The black-headed and the white-bellied caique have a similar appearance.

The caique is a stocky bird, surprisingly heavy for its size, as most new owners will point out.

What can caiques eat?

Since wild caiques forage for fruits and vegetables in the morning, serve your “salads” at the start of the day, but remove them by dusk. Chop the pieces or run them through the blender. This can prevent picky eaters from avoiding the parts they don’t like, thus guaranteeing a more balanced diet. Apples. Peaches. Apricots. Bananas. Blueberries. Pears. Plums.
